William Rowe Explains Protein's Definition Of Good Growth Standard & Protein DAO Structure

April 19, 2022

We had William Rowe, the Founder of Protein and one of the leads of the Protein DAO, in this Episode of NEWFORUM. Protein DAO is a community where people and ideas grow. William and NewForum hosts had a chat about Protein’s definition of Good Growth standard (Web3 B Corp) and the Protein community. William talked about 100 days of DAO, a Protein project over the last 100 days, building, experimenting, and evolving what it means to create a mission-led decentralized community. William shared some thoughts from their learnings, Go-To-Community Strategies, and much more in this episode of the NEWFORUM.

We started by asking William to tell us about the intention and story behind the brand and how William found himself in the Web3 rabbit hole.

William shared that Protein has been around for 20-plus years as a brand and a business. And it originated very much within an agency, consulting world, doing work for big brands, and helping them understand consumer insight, cultural strategy, sort of community-led activations, as we call it, he explained.

“I fell in the Web3 rabbit hole, Christmas 2020. And that just answered so many questions, both in terms of Decentralized Ownership, a Token Layer, within a year…” — William

William pointed out that they launched the Protein Token without a DAO, and the Tokenized access application approvals saw about 300 members now in the Protein DAO. He mentioned that the DAO is still early to answer some fundamental questions about why they exist, and that is where the Good Growth concept originated.

He shared that it’s a concept they’ve been talking about internally, and their agency is a B Corp, and he is a B leader. They understand their role and responsibility to help from an agency perspective; help brands make better decisions from a workspace perspective. He explained that it’s about bringing people together through the right lenses as a community, like, Why do they exist? What is it that we’re here to achieve?

“Get growth, I mean, it was right in front of us. It’s like — well, there’s our mission, right to define, develop, and question what is growth, and redefine it through a lens of what is currently known as sort of triple bottom line. So this idea of like your KPIs within an organization isn’t exclusively profit and increasing your shareholder value. It’s also, you know, how happier your team is, right? What are the mental health-like programs? How do you think about how you operate as a company, within a human, you know, physical, tangible capacity? And then also the third is the planet — what’s your impact on your planet, your sustainability footprint, your supply chain, all of those considerations…” — William

He pointed out that it’s about bringing that language knowledge and efficient work. ESG is another framework for Web3- what they are working on and is still in its early stages with this sort of good growth mission.

“ I think, a key opportunity for Web3 is the utility, the application of the technology, for good in the broader sense of impact or influence, or whichever way or lens you want to use it for” — William

William talked more about the mission and vision of Protein, the Protein DAO, and Protein’s definition of Good Growth standard (Web3 B Corp) in his interview with us!

We were also curious about the 100 days a DAO project. Here is what William had to say.

“Yeah, we wrote a piece, which I recommend, you read 100 days a DAO on our Mirror. It’s a journey and clears my point about a pretty seismic mental shift of unlearning. And that is the word. And I don’t think people have recognized that enough, of the transition of Web2 to Web3. It’s not about age; I think about age as a mindset. But yeah, it’s about behavior; because it’s entirely different. And this applies to anybody coming into Web3- you need to unlearn everything, but not everything. And it’s not like that utopian, and I’m not that kind of optimist. But it’s very different…” — William

Still, on the DAO side of Web3, we asked William about his thoughts and experiences with DAO proposals and voting. We wanted to know his views on categorizing proposals by, for example, a topic area and if he had any tips for successful community proposals.

“There aren’t any good Web2 examples of it, but it’s the idea of putting something out there. And entrusting the power and the true sense of your community to evolve what you do. And that’s a big challenge for established Web2 brands to literally hand over the keys…” — William

William said that it is an important question because the fundamental mechanic of DAO success is, how do you make decisions? Which he pointed out may not be appreciated in a Web2 company. Hence, the leadership, CEO, leaders, and management are present to make decisions. And everybody else is just there, executing decisions. And so, like scrap that model he added.

“Empower everybody. Again, different ways of empowerment; how many Tokens you hold is one strategy called the Voting Strategy. One person, one vote.Because it’s fundamental to the success of any DAO, and there isn’t one answer either. So, I mean, personally, and from our perspective, we’ve tried and are continually trying several different approaches…” — William

He explained that they use a platform called, Snapshot, a Voting platform that is not on-chain, but its Token wallet is connected and recognizes any Token purchases you’ve got. He added that the process is pretty straightforward. He talked more about Snapshot and other platforms they have explored for their approach to voting and decision-making. William also mentioned their failures and learnings in his full interview.

He also touched on 100 days of DAO, a Protein project over the last 100 days, building, experimenting, and evolving what it means to create a mission-led decentralized community. William shared thoughts from their learnings and dissected their Go-To-Community strategies.

Finally, he shared his perspective on what leadership means in Web3, referring to roles and titles like CEO, Managers, and others, and the mental shift of unlearning when transitioning from Web2 to Web3.
